I recently changed over a domain name for a site of mine and used 301 permanent redirects to point to the new domain. I had done this exercise a year previous and found the switch to be pretty painless it took about 2-3 weeks for the new site to come online and reach its previous search performance.

The experience this time has been slightly different. The new domain, at present, has very poor results in Google where before it was in the top 3 for most appropriate key word queries. It's now 6 weeks on and it seems like the site's ranking is returning, but only slowly. It looks like there is an incremental effect over a period of time??

Fingers crossed the full ranking should return soon. :-)

P.S. MSN and Yahoo picked up and reflected the change within a few days.

Today I received my iPod Shuffle from the online apple store in the UK.

Here are my thoughts on the iPod shuffle...

The pros...

As you would expect the shuffle packaging and design is A1 and comes with all the style you would expect from an Apple product, top class.

Installation is easy and the shuffle integrates nicely with iTunes allowing you to fill the shuffle up with music using a playlist or your entire iTunes library.

The shuffle is light weight and easy to use, the battery life is excellent and the USB recharge is a great feature.

Navigating your music on the shuffle is easy and can be done without looking at the buttons and the additional 'laynard', included with the shuffle, allowing you to hang the shuffle from your neck, works well.

The cons...

<del>The iPod shuffle only works with iTunes you can't use it like a hard drive and drag and drop files to it. And annoyingly every time I use the shuffle with iTunes a windows folder pops up with a folder called iPod_control in it??</del> Update:Whoops, you can use the iPod like a hard drive you just need to set the option within iTunes under iPod Shuffle properties.

If you are sharing music from another machine you will not be able to copy the shared music to your shuffle, this is really bad and makes sharing up music pretty useless. To get around this I share up a drive and let each copy of iTunes map to the shared drive, messy.

I can't find an effective way to integrate my podcasts and music without explicitly copying over the required files.

Overall the iPod Shuffle is an excellent portable player, easy to use and stylish with good integration into iTunes.

World of Warcraft is an excellent game; I purchased it last week and was up and running in 30mins after a huge 4 disc load. I started learning the ropes and had a good few hours play. The next day I fired it up I was getting intermittent connection problems and after logging into the game the ping bar would gradually, sometimes immediately, go red. WoW is pretty much unplayable when this happens. I persevered for a couple of days putting it down to network traffic etc. and then started looking around for some more info on the problem.

After reading around the subject and trying the wireless connection once more I decided to swap out the Linksys Wireless-G PCI card for a standard wired 3-com PCI and immediately the problem was solved, WoW now runs fine and is totally lag free. :-)

I'm not entirely sure the wireless problem is solely to do with WoW as I have experienced similar problems in other games, but they have normally worked on a reboot or several. Strangely the wireless problems also only occurred when I was running the game, I could task switch and the wireless connection would suddenly spring back to life. I tested this on WoW by pinging the wireless machine...In game I would get 'request timed out' or absurdly large request times and when I task switched back to the desktop I would suddenly start getting 2ms, 3ms response times, strange.

This entry is well over due. The past year has been a bit of a roller coaster with the arrival of my first son and all.

Unfortunaltey projects I normally would have had to time to focus on have taken a bit of a back burner. Vox Lite is one of those projects.

This does not mean I've totally given up on it, there is nothing out there at the moment which does a better job so I'll stick with it and enhance it when I have time.

So a new version is in the pipeline. I'm thinking of charging $10-$15 for it, if no one fancies buying it, no sweat. :-) Or maybe I should ask for donations, not sure how well this works though?? Alternativley I could go the open source route anyhow's we'll see.
